Your Brain On Blueberries
The blueberry, commonly referred to as a 'super fruit' for its power to lower the risk of heart disease and cancer, could also help aid in the prevention of dementia and other cognitive disorders. Blueberries are packed full of flavonoids, which have beneficial antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that are easily absorbed into the body's bloodstream.
A recent study published in Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism suggests blueberries can help with improve brain health in people aged 65-77. In the study, those who drank concentrated blueberry juice daily showed cognitive function improvements, increased blood flow to the brain and activation of the brain while carrying out cognitive tests.
"Our cognitive function tends to decline as we get older, but previous research has shown that cognitive function is better preserved in healthy older adults with a diet rich in plant-based foods," explains Dr. Joanna Bowtell, head of Sports and Health Sciences at the University of Exeter. "In this study we have shown that with just 12 weeks of consuming 30ml of concentrated blueberry juice every day, brain blood flow, brain activation and some aspects of working memory were improved in this group of healthy older adults."
Blueberries help with relieve oxidative stress (OS) of the brain, which limits the brain's ability to detoxify their harmful effects of free radicals. Antioxidants, found in blueberries and other plants, play an important role in the prevention of brain aging and neurodegenerative diseases.
