Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. The good news is that it's one of the most preventable! A recent study suggests consuming 3 or more portions of blueberries each week could help decrease risk of heart attack in women by up to 30%!
The study included 93,600 women ages 25 – 42 who were asked to complete questionnaires every 4 years regarding their diet. Over the course of the 18 year study, 405 heart attacks took place. Women who consumed the most blueberries and strawberries had a 32% reduction in their risk of heart attack when compared with those who consumed the berries once every thirty days or less.
Blueberries contain high quantities of anthocyanins, a dietary flavonoid found naturally in grapes and wine, eggplant, blackberries, strawberries and other fruits and vegetables. Anthocyanins could help counter plaque buildup and dilate arteries, allowing blood cells to more easily pass through. The research also shows that consuming blueberries early in life can help reduce heart attack risk later in life.
